Detect conspiratorial thinkers

We all know someone who has succumbed to conspiracy theories — or maybe that someone is us from time to time. The reasons why people believe in conspiracy theory are numerous and counterintuitive. It would be useful to have a way to detect conspiratorial thinkers, so we can make better decisions about whether or not to spend time with them or give them our trust.

The answers to the following four questions will constitute a validated scale of conspiratorial thinking. The top 25% (i.e. got all 4 right) are considered “high conspiratorial thinkers.”

  1. Is everything a secret plot?
  2. Is everything directed by a small group of people?
  3. Are these people opaque and unknown to the masses?
  4. Do they fully control the outcomes of major events, often times having planned them all in advance?
